  • Swine flu jab and GBS

    Twitter's @ExcellentCandy posted a message last August 15, raising the alarm on the possible side effects of swine flu vaccines, which is set to be given to millions of people by October of this year. The priority are children, elderly, pregnant mothers, and the immunocompromised patients.

    An article from the Daily Mail, however, warned raised the alarm on the danger of the swine flu vaccine, specifically its link to Guillain-Barre Syndrome.

    Guillain-Barre Syndrome is a disease of the nerve. It is a severe disease that starts with paralysis of the legs to progress higher up of the body - the arms and the face. It becomes dangerous when complications of the respiratory system would arise. Eventually the patient could not breath without the aid of a ventilator. Erratic increase of blood pressure may also be noted.

    GBS is autoimmune, which means that it is caused by the body trying to protect itself from a virus or other harmful elements in the body. Instead of attacking these elements, the body's soldiers would instead attack the nerves, specifically the myelin and the axons. This causes the blocking of signals from the brain to the muscle that the nerve serves, resulting in weakness and eventually, paralysis.

    According to the Daily Mail report, a letter from the Health Protection Agency was sent to around 600 senior neurologists, asking them to be on the look out for cases of GBS ones the immunization starts.

    The letter cited the 1976 incident wherein more people in the United States died from the vaccine than from the flu itself. 500 cases of GBS were detected, stating that the vaccine increases the risk of getting GBS eight times! Now, if that isn't significant, I don't know what is.

    Twenty five people died of GBS after receiving the swine flu vaccine, while only one died of the flu itself.

    So, this just shows that the government is condoning the use of innocent people in the trials being conducted by large pharmaceutical companies. These companies have nothing but money as their main interest and now is banking on the swine flu scare in order to push through with their study on coming up with a vaccine that would gain them millions, if not billions of dollars. And at whose expense? At the expense of people who are just worried about their state of health.

    The letters were distributed in secret, why can they just not reveal these vital information to the people who have volunteered to undergo the vaccination, as part of the pharmaceutical companies's research study on the vaccine? Doesn't every study require informed consent? Or is it enough to tell them that the side effects are still unknown because anyway this is supposed to be an initial study?

  • Eternalimplosion: there is no known treatment, but patients recover on their own... but while they are still recovering, monitoring and care is needed, sometimes to the point of putting the patient on a respirator to assist with breathing... the challenge then is to ensure that the patient survives through the challenging recovery period...

    ...reminds me of a similar situation in that movie, "The Constant Gardener" where a pharmaceutical company is conducting trials for TB and they are using the poor people in Africa as their trials subjects. And the company doesn't know that their products are causing more damage and their subjects died. They buried the bodies in secret so no one would know.

  • @c_jamaica - scary gyud siya pero its true... the sad thing is, the people are so much willing to volunteer thinking that its their best shot to being protected from this pandemic, which is not as harmful to healthy adults with fully developed immune systems :D

  • What? You mean, the government was WRONG to allow an untested, unproven, unregulated vaccine into the general populous? How can that be? The government is supposed to be the best option for protecting patients!

    Pfffpht. The whole thing seriously makes me sick (or is that the swine flu? Or dog flu? Or avian flu?). I'm pregnant, and I will NOT be getting vaccinated. My child and I will not be guinea pigs for the FDA. If they can prove to me that this vaccine does not cause more harm than it cures, I may reconsider -- but by that time, who knows what new flu will be the next killer. I'm betting slug flu.
