  • Why Filipinos remain poor

    Culture

Now this is an entertaining and very informative video. The Palace is actually countering this video saying that what this "documentary" revealed were nothing new but rehashed issues from the last 2010 elections. (News report, here). Well, I say, those issues were still not answered by the Cojuangcos, specifically by Philippine President Simeon Benigno Cojuangco Aquino III, or Noynoy, or P.Noy, as how he want's to be called now that he's president. So, until these issues are answered by the President, particularly that of Hacienda Luisita, only then would there be closure to the questions. Now, it is safe to say that the allegations may just be true.

The main issue here is the Cojuangco's hacienda and property, apparently stolen from the poor farmers, and the family's eventual entry to power in order to protect their selfish interest. It discusses the painful ignorance of a people who worships a family as their savior, and a family who takes advantage of this blind adoration by continuously enriching themselves at the expense of the poor. And they expect the poor to be grateful. Well, of course, these are all allegations, but from the stories of the victim farmers, I am starting to believe that there is truth in this fantastical story.

P.Noy said during his campaign speech in 2010, that he will distribute their family's land holding, the Hacienda Luisita, by 2014. That remains to be seen, but it looks like more harassment are happening, and the likelihood that the president was sincere with his promise is very bleak. Sincerity, apparently, is not one of the values that President Noy values.

This video became viral in the Philippines, and I am not surprised why. Whether the allegations in this video are true or not, the fact remains that President Aquino's family's Hacienda Luisita remains to be one of the Philippine's top symbol of greed, impunity, and abuse of power. Now, most of the facts here are not just rumors, they are supported by news reports and other documents. It's up to you if you want to believe it or not.

Well, one thing I am thankful for. I am thankful for our freedom to post this video without fear of being prosecuted for being critical to people in government. I hope P.Noy won't have the audacity to take that away from us.
